Attic Fans Can Cool Your Home – Home Improvement

This extreme heat wave probably has you looking for additional ways to cool your home. How about using an attic fan? Attic fans draw cool air in through the soffit and gable vents, and push the hot air outside. They’re easy to install yourself, but there are a few things you should attend to first.
You need to make sure your soffit vents are clear so the air can pass through. Go around the attic and remove any insulation that may be blocking them, and brush away any lint or cobwebs. Then plug any major cracks in the attic that would draw the cold air from the house. One good way to spot a crack is to look for dirty insulation. That’s a sign that air is flowing through it. It’s always a good idea to add more insulation. If you already have insulation between the joists, just roll some more over it, perpendicular to the existing insulation. It’s best to use insulation without facing, and remember not to block the soffit vents. Following these tips will help keep your house cool and reduce your energy bills.
