Some Advice for Planting Grass Seed – Landscaping and Lawn Care

Planning to plant grass seed this spring? It’s not too early to get started. The freezing and thawing of the ground will help push your seeds into the soil and the melting snow and spring rains will naturally water your seed. Look for the NTEP logo on your bag of seed. This means that the National Turf Evaluation Program has approved the seed for its vibrant green color, drought tolerance and disease & insect resistance. When planting, loosen the soil for 2-3 inches, break up the clumps, level any pockets where water might collect then thinly spread your seed. Fertilize with a starter fertilizer and keep well watered. Grass seed planted in the spring should not have weed control products applied to it until the grass has germinated and been mowed at least three times.
