Time to Clean Your Chimney – Home Improvement

With the chilly evenings it’s nice to cozy up to a warm fire, but before you do so, make sure your chimney is clean. Creosote build-up inside the chimney can cause a fire that could quickly spread to your entire house. If you don’t mind getting dirty, you can clean the chimney yourself. It’s not difficult. Measure your chimney to find out how wide and long it is then go down to your hardware store and buy a wire chimney brush and some extension rods(think Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins). You can either climb on the roof and brush from the top down, or poke your head inside the fireplace and brush from the bottom up. Brushing from inside can make a major mess, so use plenty of tarps to cover your furniture and the floor surrounding the fireplace. If you choose to go up to the roof, be very careful you don’t fall. Always wear goggles and a dust mask to protect yourself from the soot. Use a mirror to get a good look inside the chimney and see if you’ve missed any creosote, then get your shop vac and clean up the mess. If you’re not into dirt, call a professional chimney sweep.
