Lawn & Landscaping: Preparation for winter

Spring is our busiest time for lawn care and landscaping, but fall offers a great opportunity to get a head start on next spring’s work!  Planting of trees, shrubs and grass can be accomplished in the fall, particularly in September and October. The cooler weather and increased rainfall can help establish root systems before cold weather arrives, and minimizes the amount of watering necessary to promote growth.

Consider removing unwanted shrubs, and performing general yard and bed cleanup in the fall. The more you accomplish in the fall, the less you will have to deal with in the spring.  Mulching of shrubs and trees will also help insulate root systems from the harsh cold that we sometimes experience in Ohio—which is especially critical if we get a cold snap before we have snow on the ground to offer insulation value to plants.
